Slot machines (poki) online - are allowed

Gaming machines, known in Australia as kakpoki (from angl.poker machines *), are one of the most popular forms of gambling in the country. In Queensland, as in other states, they are regulated on two levels: federal legislation and state regulations.

Legal regulation of online poki
At the federal level, a key act is the Interactive Gambling Act 2001 (IGA). This law explicitly prohibits the provision of online slot machines to users located in Australia, regardless of whether the operator is registered in the country or abroad.

According to IGA:
  • Operators are prohibited from offering online poki (including slots, video poker, roulette, blackjack and other casino games) to Australian players.
  • Advertising of online casinos and their games is prohibited, including through the Internet, social networks, email and the media.
  • Violation of the law entails large fines for operators - up to millions of dollars for each violation.

Regulation in Queensland
In Queensland, gambling, including slot machines, is controlled by the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation (OLGR).

Land machines (* poki *) are allowed in licensed casinos, clubs and hotels, subject to strict adherence to the rules.
Online machines are prohibited to be provided to in-state players, regardless of where the operator site is registered.

OLGR has partnered with the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) to identify and block illegal online venues offering poki to Queenslanders.

Player responsibility
IGA is aimed primarily at operators, not users. However:
  • Players using illegal online platforms do not have legal protection for their funds.
  • Winnings may be forfeited or unpaid.
  • Access to the site can be blocked at the request of ACMA.

Risks of using illegal online poki

Lack of guarantees of the honesty of games and payments.
High risk of loss of funds without the possibility of their return.
Possibility of personal data leakage.

Result
In Queensland, online slot machines (poki) are prohibited by federal law and are not licensed in the state. Legally, you can only play on ground machines in licensed establishments. Any online venues offering poki to Queenslanders operate illegally and there are financial and legal risks involved in taking part in such games.
